The Eduardo Torroja Institute, Spain’s leading center for construction science research, launched an initiative to evaluate indoor environmental quality (IEQ) in real-world conditions. Their work focuses on assessing how air quality in various building types, including residential homes, impacts health, comfort and energy performance.
One of the main challenges was connectivity. Research teams frequently moved devices between test sites, many of which lacked stable or available WiFi networks. At the same time, the project required a highly accurate and adaptable monitoring solution capable of detecting specific pollutants such as formaldehyde, without experiencing cross-interference from other gases.
One of the core complexities of this project was the need for mobility and independent connectivity. Unlike fixed installations, the research team needed to move monitoring devices frequently between residential and experimental environments, often without access to stable WiFi networks. To meet this challenge, the Eduardo Torroja Institute deployed:
- 12 MICA Plus devices, easily relocatable for use in both residential and experimental buildings.
- Each device was connected to a My inBiot Business license, enabling centralized access to real-time data, environmental heatmaps, and automated reports.
- SIM-based cellular connectivity, ensuring autonomous operation without reliance on local WiFi.
- High-precision sensors for key parameters including formaldehyde, TVOC, and particulate matter.
- A dedicated API integration ensured seamless data transfer to the Institute’s own analysis platforms, supporting internal workflows and scientific modeling.
- Through My inBiot, researchers gained access to advanced analytics, export functions, and visualization tools to streamline documentation and deepen environmental insights.
This mobile and autonomous setup ensured reliable, high-quality data collection across all locations, overcoming the connectivity limitations typical of dynamic field research.
- Operational efficiency : The inBiot solution enabled the research team to conduct their work with greater agility and confidence. The devices’ robust performance and remote capabilities minimized technical disruptions, allowing researchers to focus on analysis rather than troubleshooting.
- Simplified deployment : Fully autonomous devices with cellular connectivity allowed seamless installation in diverse field conditions.
- Reliable data access : Real-time monitoring and centralized dashboards improved data consistency and availability.
- Workflow integration : API connectivity ensured that IAQ data flowed directly into the Institute’s research systems, supporting faster interpretation and documentation.
- Scalable operations : The flexible, portable setup supported a more dynamic research model, with the ability to quickly adapt to new locations and study parameters.
