Context

The University of Zaragoza is strengthening its campuswide IoT network for building monitoring to advance its sustainability and digitalization strategy. A key driver is BREEAM Certification, where continuous monitoring of indoor environmental parameters provides auditable evidence for Health and Wellbeing credits and supports efficient building operation.

Within this framework, MICA devices enable the integration of indoor air quality monitoring into the campus IoT and SCADA infrastructure alongside environmental and energy sensors. The objective is to ensure real time visibility, centralized oversight, and data driven facilities management that underpins certification compliance across the university’s building portfolio.

Solution

To support its sustainability goals and BREEAM certification pathway, the University of Zaragoza deployed a flexible and interoperable IAQ monitoring system designed to integrate seamlessly into its existing campuswide IoT and SCADA infrastructure.

  • 5 × MICA WELL LoRa strategically installed in priority indoor areas to monitor health and comfort indicators in line with certification requirements.
  • 1 × MICA Plus LoRa providing extended monitoring capabilities and detailed analytics for advanced evaluation.
  • Integration with UNIZAR’s IoT network, using LoRaWAN connectivity to ensure reliable data transmission across diverse buildings and complex interiors.
  • Open API interoperability enabling data exchange with SCADA, data lakes, and certification reporting systems.

A central challenge of the project was deploying a standardized IAQ framework across heterogeneous university buildings while maintaining compatibility with existing LoRaWAN and SCADA systems. The solution had to ensure uniform data models, secure connectivity, and the ability to generate actionable alerts that directly supported BREEAM Health & Wellbeing credits as well as day-to-day facilities management.

Outcomes & Benefits
  • Contribution to BREEAM certification by providing continuous IAQ evidence across multiple campus buildings.
  • Campuswide IoT integration, positioning MICA as part of a broader digital infrastructure combining energy, HVAC, and environmental monitoring.
  • Evidence based facility management workflows, with IAQ alerts embedded into condition based maintenance and ventilation adjustment strategies.
  • Foundation for research applications, supporting studies on the energy–health balance, occupant exposure, and comfort through consistent, high quality datasets.

Testimonial

“Continuous monitoring with the MICA devices provides us with reliable and comparable data across buildings. We can adjust ventilation and maintenance based on evidence, while at the same time having ready-to-use reports for BREEAM, which greatly streamlines the technical work.”

“Integration via LoRa and API with our systems has been key. Having unified dashboards and alerts allows us to anticipate issues, optimize HVAC performance, and enhance wellbeing on campus without adding operational complexity.”
